Step 1: Welcome to Birmingham’s Winterbourne House and Gardens. To begin today’s walk, head towards the house entrance.
Step 2: There’s an entrance fee of about £8 for adults, £6 for seniors, and £23 for families.
Step 3: Winterbourne is a rare surviving example of an early 20th century suburban villa and garden. The house was built in 1903 for John and Margaret Nettlefold.
Step 4: You can tour the house if you’d like. It’s a product of the Arts and Crafts movement, with an emphasis on high quality handcrafted features.
Step 5: Today we’ll be walking in the garden, designed by Margaret Nettlefold, who was inspired by the books and garden designs of Gertrude Jekyll. After a period of restoration, the garden was Grade II listed by English Heritage in 2008.
Step 6: In 1944, the gardens were bequeathed to the University of Birmingham. The garden became the University’s Botanic Garden and new areas for teaching and plant conservation were developed within the historic layout.
