Step 1: This route forms part of the Colchester Orbital, a 14-15 mile walk around Colchester town, linking some of its most important & beautiful green spaces.
Step 2: This route section offers easier access for mobility-restricted walkers & chair users (the terrain is undulating, but paths are hard-surfaced & barrier free).
Step 3: The walk begins on Bromley Road, opposite the former Beehive Pub. A welcome sign marks the entrance.
Step 4: Salary Brook is 48 acres of mixed habitats. Much of this site is now designated as a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation. The area is rich in wildlife such as the nightingale, Reed warbler, lizard, water vole & bats! 🦇🦎
Step 5: The reserve is always open. There is no designated parking, but buses operate frequently in the surrounding area.
Step 6: The route is for the most part largely level, though undulating in places. Visibility is generally good & there are beautiful views out towards farmland.
