• Step 1: This 7.5 mile walk is a feast of waterways: canals, rivers and lakes. Generally the walking is easy along largely level paths. Waymarking is good and reassuring. There is a danger of flooding after very wet weather.

• 

  Step 2: Come out of Hayes and Harlington station into Station Road and turn right.

• 

  Step 3: Cross the end of Station Approach. Follow the pavement round to the right of the mini roundabout. Cross the bridge ahead.

• 

  Step 4: Turn right immediately after the bridge. Walk down to the towpath and then walk back under the bridge (no. 200).

• 

  Step 5: Pass the milepost: ‘Braunston 87 miles’. Continue along the towpath under bridges numbered 199 and 198.

• 

  Step 6: The canal curves gently to reach bridge 196.
