Step 1: The history of the Bulwell Forest recreation ground shows it had many uses. Historic maps of the area, dating back to the period 1875 - 1885 refer to part of Bulwell Forest site as being called 'Soldiers Hill' and 'Potters Hollow'.
Step 2: It is believed 'Soldiers Hill' is derived from its use early in World War I as a recruiting base. The first of the 322 men from Bulwell who joined up were recruited within two months of the outbreak of the war, on 26th September 1914.
Step 3: The men were subsequently trained at the Ground. Maps dated 1937-1940 also refer to a cricket ground, Bulwell North railway junction, Bulwell Common rail station and a Miniature rifle range.
Step 4: This walk starts from the Bulwell Forest playground off Hucknall Road. There is free car parking here and regular buses.
Step 5: Enter the playground. Carefully cross the car park and turn left following the path in front of the fenced sports court.
Step 6: Continue straight ahead passing the play area with the coloured fence on your left.
