• Step 1: This is one of a series of mud-free walks that are of medium length and mainly off-road. They are suitable for winter days when the weather has been wet. The walks have good public transport links.

• 

  Step 2: Turn right out of Angel tube station. Walk along Upper Street with the traffic on your left.

• 

  Step 3: Just after the York pub, take the first right down Duncan Street.

• 

  Step 4: Cross Colebrooke Row at the end of Duncan Street. Keep ahead through the gateway between brick pillars.

• 

  Step 5: Walk down the slope to join the canal towpath just beyond the portal of the Islington tunnel.

• 

  Step 6: Follow the towpath for just under 2.5 miles. Quite soon you come to the City Road lock.
