Step 1: Welcome to the Green Circle! This clockwise segment follows the valley of the Alphin Brook. You’ll find a big range of sights along the way.
Step 2: The Exeter Green Circle is a series of walking routes that connects Exeter's natural green spaces together. In total, the full circle is 19 kilometres, or 12 miles.
Step 3: Get ready to explore green countryside valley parks and the pavements of quiet leafy suburbs. We'll discover views and locations that are all part of Exeter but which often seem miles from the city.
Step 4: Today’s walk begins at the car park along the canal at the Riverside Valley Park. Begin by heading over the bridge over the canal.
Step 5: Construction on the canal began in 1563. It was the first to use the pound lock.
Step 6: Pound locks came to Europe in the 14th century and these are the locks that you'll see up and down the canal and river network.
