Step 1: Welcome to Exeter Central. Today, we’ll show you a short walk around Northernhay Gardens.
Step 2: Just before Five Guys, turn left up the path towards the entrance to the gardens.
Step 3: Pass by the stone pillars. We’re now entering the park.
Step 4: Northernhay Gardens are of outstanding historic significance. They were laid out by the City Chamber for the public recreation at an unusually early date - 1612.
Step 5: This early park was destroyed in the Civil War: in 1642 large new defensive ditches were dug outside the walls for the city's defence.
Step 6: Soon after the restoration, in 1664, the city set about restoring the park, planting hundreds of young elms and laying out gravel paths. The park has been maintained as a public amenity ever since.
