Step 1: This is Sir Henry Englefield. In 1801 he visited Southampton and wrote a book called 'A Walk Through Southampton'.
Step 2: This walk recreates some of his route, and looks at how things have changed between now and then.
Step 3: Begin the tour at the Bargate, which is where he started too. The Bargate was erected in about 1180 AD but has seen lots of changes since then.
Step 4: One historian described it as 'probably the finest, and certainly the most complex, town gateway in Britain.'
Step 5: This is how the Bargate looked around the time of Sir Henry's visit.
Step 6: Pass under the gateway and look at the Bargate from the south side.
