Step 1: Start at Swindon Railway Station. Walk past Costa Coffee and continue along Station Road.
Step 2: Note the cottages on the right and the old railway works on the left (once past the car parks)
Step 3: This is the entrance to the tunnel- turn into it. The tunnel was built in 1871, nearly 30 years after the railway works were founded.
Step 4: Prior to the tunnel being built workers had to cross the railway tracks… as perilous as it sounds! Walk to the end.
Step 5: This building housed the Chief Mechanical Engineers drawing office. It is now home to the Historic England archives.
Step 6: Make sure you look up to see these original lights! Retrace your steps through the tunnel and then turn right on Bristol Street.
