Step 1: For over 100 years the New Swindon Mechanics’ Institute served at the heart of its community as a library, theatre and a market.
Step 2: The organisation itself predates the construction of the building by more than 10 years in 1843, with 15 GWR workers exchanging a library of 130 books between them. By 1844 the organisation had grown to 129 members with 500 books.
Step 3: By the 1850s the institute had outgrown its current space in the GWRs “R” Shop. In 1854 construction began with a Masonic ceremony marking the start, and by may the following year the Mechanics’ Institute was complete.
Step 4: The GWR provided the Institute with £100 annually lot assist with upkeep and services, but did not own it.
Step 5: Upon opening the Institute provided one of Britain’s earliest lending libraries, a stage for lectures and performances, baths, a dining hall, and perhaps most importantly for early residents - a market.
Step 6: The Institute was a thriving local hub for the performing arts, and hosted all manner of theatre.
