  Step 3: Our journey begins at Birmingham New Street station. Take the Stephenson Street exit. Turn left then immediately right down Lower Temple St.

  Step 4: Turn right on New Street. This is Birmingham’s main shopping area, a vibrant pedestrianised zone with so much to discover at all hours.

  Step 5: Turn left onto Needless Alley. No one knows why it’s called “Needless”. It may have originally been Needlers Alley…

• Step 6: …named after the needlemakers that used to occupy the storefronts along the street. Today, the joke goes: there’s one alley in Birmingham, and it’s needless!
