Step 1: Welcome to lovely Dunbar! This walk starts at John Muir’s birthplace on High Street.
Step 2: John Muir was an influential environmentalist and writer. His work led to the preservation of large swaths of the western half of the US as National Parks. Muir was born here in 1838. It’s now a museum to his life and work.
Step 3: Begin by walking down High Street, towards the church at its far end. Take note of all the independent businesses and feel free to pop in.
Step 4: Our walk will end on High Street, so you can do your shopping when you get back in a bit, too.
Step 5: Walk past the Muir statue and the inscription: “Around my native town of Dunbar, I loved to wander along the seashore to gaze and wonder…”
Step 6: Nearby is the Mercat Cross, erected in 1912 to replace the original that was removed in the 1700s.
