Step 1: Starting outside St Mary’s Catholic Church (St Mary’s Road, WS10 9DL). Walk down the hill to your right, towards Hall End Road
Step 2: Designed by Sir Gilbert Blount in 1872 for Father Stuart Bathurst to replace a structure of 1852. The building is brick with limestone dressings in an early style and a copper spire. Oxidation has made the spire a vibrant green.
Step 3: Walk down Hall End Road. To the left you will see St Bartholomew’s Church which backs onto St Mary’s Church.
Step 4: There are some 13th and 15th century features, but the church was heavily restored in 1827 and 1885. 15 stained glass, complement the Jacobean Pulpit of 1611. Dudley Castle, Rowley Hills and Sedgley Beacan can be seen from here.
Step 5: Adjacent to the church you will see Ethelfleda Gardens. Continue down Ethelfleda Terrace towards the town.
Step 6: The gardens were named after the Mercian princess, daughter of Alfred the Great, who is said to have constructed a fort in Wednesbury. It is most likely to have consisted of ramparts surrounding a village of timber houses .
