  Step 1: Enter Alkrington Woods via the gateway opposite the bus station. Follow the loose-stone path past the bench and noticeboard.

• 

  Step 2: At a junction continue ahead as the path bears right next to a grassy swathe between trees.

• 

  Step 3: When you reach a bridge over the Irk, cross it.

• 

  Step 4: It is worth taking a moment to view the rushing river below you as it flows towards Manchester city centre. Continue along the stoney path.

• 

  Step 5: Your onward route is soon joined by another path coming in from the left. There are some low overhanging trees here.

• 

  Step 6: In places, the path is muddy. The McBride's factory is to your right, the site of the old Irkdale Bleachworks.
