Step 1: Welcome to Netley Abbey! This English Heritage managed site is free to enter & is open seven days a week. Opening hours may vary.
Step 2: There is limited, free parking here. Buses from Southampton City Centre, as well as other local towns run to & from the nearby Grange Road. The closest train station is in Netley.
Step 3: There are a number of information boards around the site to provide you with lots more facts! Continue ahead through the archway to explore.
Step 4: Netley is the most complete surviving abbey built by the Cistercian monks in southern England & was founded in 1238.
Step 5: When the abbey was complete it would have been home to about 15 monks & 30 lay northwest, officials & servants.
Step 6: In 1536 monastic life at the abbey came to an end after the suppression by Henry VIII. The abbey was turned into a Tudor courthouse.
