  Step 1: Meet & greet at Beaulieu Road sales yard. Beaulieu Road is tiny, just an inn & a short terrace of cottages.

• 

  Step 2: Cross the bridge over the railway. On your left is Shatterford car park. It's closed for nesting season, so foot traffic only.

• 

  Step 3: Walk through this lovely copse of Scots pine trees. 🌲

• 

  Step 4: This final lonesome pine is alongside the trail onto Shatterford Heath.

• 

  Step 5: This is the precise spot where my book opens, on an icy January morning.

• 

  Step 6: Look out for specialised flowers, like this bog asphodel.
