Step 1: Altar Stones is a suburban mini nature reserve with epic geology and fantastic views over the region. Head to Altar Stones Lane, Markfield LE67 9PX to begin. You can park in the lay-by or there’s a bus stop on Ashby Road.
Step 2: The terrain is uneven & can be muddy. Please note that livestock might be present and dogs are required to be on leads. The reserve is always open. We stopped here to have a rest off the M1 (J22). You can hear the roaring traffic.
Step 3: Follow the signage and footpath left onto the nature reserve. Continue uphill towards the Altar Stones. Can you see them? At the top, they should be on your left-hand side.
Step 4: According to Wikipedia “this site has outcrops of Precambrian volcanic rocks”! Follow the path to the Altar Stones and take a closer look.
Step 5: These large rocky outcrops are said to be between 600- 700 million years old. Crazy!
Step 6: Look around you, can you see the remains of an old mill? We really recommend wandering as you wish as it’s hard to get lost here.
